  • 4G vs 5G Connectivity: How does 5G impact the Battery Life of a Smartphone over 4G?

The lab team at ViserMark has been running battery life tests for some of the newly released smartphones this year. As many more Android smartphones have 5G options we wanted to take a closer look at the connectivity, performance and battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G and the Vivo Y72 5G. The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G was revealed in January this year as the flagship for the Samsung S-series. For testing purposes, this time our Samsung Galaxy S21 5G is Phantom Violet, (we think it is quite a refreshing colour), also it is still a compact smartphone available within the flagship tier (€700 +) of the Visermark Smartphone Tiers. Having many features including, an AMOLED display with adaptive refresh rate handling, enhanced selfie performance and a 4000mAh battery with 25W charging. Keep in mind, that there is no charger or headphones included with this package. The Vivo Y72 5G is the latest smartphone to be released from Vivo. Being ranked as mid tier (€200-€499) smartphone, it also showcases many features including that of a MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 5G chipset and a powerful 5000 mAh battery with 8W charging. It is an attractive smartphone for the price, being around €400 less expensive than the high-end Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. It will provide you with 5G plus all the features you come to expect from today’s smartphones. The most significant frustration mentioned by end-users about their current smartphone is poor battery. Battery performance is a top reason for selecting a new smartphone. 5G has transformed smartphone capabilities with improved connectivity to other devices, such as a household appliance, a car or simply a watch. It also allows for the streaming of TV, music, films etc. with much faster connection speeds – often 20 times faster than 4G. Our short video - Are You 5G Ready? covers the capabilities, but there are also other factors worth considering about 5G... Speed Bandwidth is a key benefit to this technology, being able to handle around a thousand times more data at once than 4G. Coverage 5G range is not as good as 4G coverage. Despite nationwide networks being already built with more on the way, speeds still vary quite widely. Battery Life 5G smartphones are likely to be much more demanding in terms of power and data than 4G smartphone equivalents. With battery life being a key consideration when buying a new smartphone, is 5G more likely to drain your battery? Well, it is time to find out! Although both smartphones are tempting, which one offers the best battery life performance on 4G or 5G? To answer this question, we took the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G and Vivo Y72 5G smartphones to our independent testing lab, where viSer test automation measures and validates key areas of an end user’s experience using our highly specialised, state-of-the-art lab environment. Our SmartViser technology experts use their years of experience to simulate real day life general usage. Testing Scope: Network Conditions: 4G & 5G with similar radio network conditions (Between -80dbm and -90dbm) Mobile Network: Orange France Location of Testing: Rennes France Use Cases: Web Browsing Youtube Social Media (Instagram) With the Vivo Y72 5G having a battery of 5000 mAh capacity, the bigger battery of the two, since the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G features a slightly lower battery capacity of 4000 mAh. The ratings indicated in our results show in minutes the duration to drain 5% of the battery capacity for the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G or the Vivo Y72 5G. Orange was selected as the network provider for both 4G and 5G, offering similar radio conditions during testing. Finally, 3 user cases were selected, specifically focussing on common daily life activities of an end-user when consuming data. Outcomes Below reflect the test results for the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G: Below reflect the test results for the Vivo Y72 5G: To learn more about our automated testing protocol click here Both smartphones when using 5G, generally display over draining slightly more. However, the test results show improved performance for streaming. Samsung Galaxy S21 5G So the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, as we already know has a smaller battery life than the Vivo Y72 5G, however, when testing on 4G and 5G within good signal strength and comparable quality conditions, the Samsung Galaxy offers similar battery life. Vivo Y72 5G Also, the Vivo Y72, with good signal strength and comparable quality conditions, offers a similar level of battery life. If you are an early adopter of 5G then it should not have a serious impact on battery life. As theoretically, radio coverage is far from wide and radio condition will remain at a lower strength and for instance, indoor coverage is weaker. At ViserMark we have measured the impact of weaker 5G radio condition on battery life. As you can see below impact is rather important. Conclusion From our findings, there is not a large difference between the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G and the Vivo Y72 5G when comparing 4G vs 5G connectivity. That said, the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G offers good performance, a sharp display and a battery life of around one day. It's also worth pointing out that the Vivo Y72 5G certainty delivers a slight performance boost with its 5000 mAh battery. Your choice to keep your phone connectivity on 5G will depend on your usage. 4G is still perfect for browsing and using social apps, indeed we have not noticed any significant changes in performance for the specific everyday user activities tested. The 4G coverage is in most locations much better than 5G and using 4G more will help to limit battery drainage. If you are heavily consuming media or a business user higher data rate may boost your experience while you will need to compromise with lower battery life. This was our very first dedicated 5G battery life and performance testing, we will continue further analysis on 4G vs 5G connectivity and the impact on the battery life and performance of a smartphone. We will aim to replicate more typical end-user usage testing incorporating 5G coverage. Further reports and testing results will be shared in the coming months with performance on specific devices, chipsets, and Network Operators. • Screen Refresh Rate and its impact on Smartphone Battery life and Performance

At ViserMark, we have been testing devices for almost a year now. We have been following the introduction of higher refresh rate displays very carefully as this new technology is directly impacting battery life. Device manufacturers these days are looking for several ways to differentiate their devices by offering various features such as optimised battery life, enhanced cameras, 4K screens and recently high-end devices have included super-fast 90Hz to 120Hz refresh rates displays. Before we start analysing the impact let's explain what refresh rate is. What is refresh rate? What we need to understand is that smartphone displays are not static. The content in our devices appears very smooth and this is because every pixel in the display updates not randomly but at regular intervals which are known as a refresh rate. Why do refresh rates matter? A higher refresh rate will give a smoother experience when consuming certain content from your smartphone. You will get less value from steady usage content like looking at pictures, reading an article or email, during calls or even enjoying a short video. But for all usages with high screen transition, the comfort a user will experience from a higher refresh rate will be unmatched: browsing, scrolling within social apps, navigating through smartphone menus, searching for emails and gaming. In fact, high refresh rates were firstly introduced on gaming-focused smartphones (like the Razer Phone) and have progressively migrated to the premium segment, then into several more devices. After using a smartphone with a 90Hz to 120Hz refresh rate you will find it exceedingly difficult to switch back to 60Hz (the standard rate) as the quality of experience is noticeably enhanced. But this optimum performance for user experience comes with its drawbacks. Higher refresh rates require extra power, meaning a direct negative impact on battery life and performance. At ViserMark we measure this impact and aim to provide guidelines in our reviews on how to deal with this parameter. Results Analysis We have been testing two different phones: the Oppo Find X2 Pro which holds an excellent 120Hz Quad HD and the Xiaomi Mi10T Pro with one of the only LCD screens able to refresh up to 144Hz. We have selected two cases where the screen must manage a fast refresh to keep up with the following user interaction: scrolling up/down in Gmail mailbox and browsing through chrome selection of articles. Here are our findings: On Gmail browsing, we measured around 10% extra power drain when switching from 60Hz to 120Hz During Chrome browsing, we have measured up to 30% extra power drain when selecting 144Hz (Power drain during Chrome browsing: 60Hz in blue / 144 Hz in black on Redmi 10T Pro) As you know, the impact on battery life can be rather important. Although enabling a higher refresh rate will lead to shorter battery life, you can not conclude that the overall usage time will be reduced by up to 30%. Indeed, manufacturers have implemented an interesting feature to help you get the best experience with minimum impact on power drain: adaptive refresh rate. This means that the smartphone will adapt its refresh rate depending on the user activity. Furthermore, while the previous adaptive feature was switching between 60Hz, 90Hz or 120Hz, brand new premium displays are integrating a new adaptive algorithm. Which, can choose within a broader range of rates, from 10Hz to 120Hz, ensuring the balance between smoother experience and control of battery life. In conclusion, the latest display technologies around refresh rate are highly changing the user experience. While manufacturers are very cautious not to affect the impact on battery life, we recommend sticking to lower refresh rates for busy days where battery percentage remains key. This will ensure you prolong the battery life when you need it most. Further results will be shared in the coming months with performance on specific devices, chipsets, and Network Operators. • 5G Impact on Battery Life

Preliminary Results 5G will bring lots of new technological advancements and speeder connections using a smartphone. It is well accepted in the Telecoms community that new advancements in technology like with 4G previously, will have lots of new advantages but the one area that always seems to suffer is the Battery life. This report will explore the benefits in terms of speeds and the impact on Battery performance taking into account the network set-up. Before we start you can see below a short video on 5G technology and how it compares with previous-generation technologies. An Overview of some of the key aspects of 5G can be seen in the video below: Test Automation At ViserMark using viSer test automation technology, we are in a position to assess and analyse many network and device Key Performance Indicators like: Data Performance (Web browsing, file transfer, streaming) Battery Life Network Access (Network coverage and performance) Call Services Messaging All testing was performed using with viSer in UK and France. 5G NSA and Main Challenges We have started a study several weeks ago on 5G NSA (Non-Standalone) in UK and France using the Live network in specific areas. The study will continue over the next months, but we can release some of the preliminary findings. NSA 5G is a solution where 5G is supported by the existing 4G infrastructure. We need to urge some caution at this stage to accurately measure the impact of the 5G in Battery life we have many variables that can affect the test results. Testing is performed on a Live network and therefore we are comparing a very mature technology 4G to a new technology 5G which is not yet fully comparable, but this can still give us some early indications. Before we get into the analysis of the results let us first list some of the challenges: Testing is performed on a Live network. 4G signal strength was very good -80dbm whereas 5G signal strength was weaker but still good at -99dbm. The first phase of testing has been performed on early 5G devices where the chipset technology was not fully optimised. We are expecting to see better performance with the latest chipsets and devices. We have experienced some network instability with services sometimes bouncing between 4G and 5G. Summary of First Observations and Findings: Network 5G deployments are still in the early phase. In 2021 we are expecting to see it more mainstream with further implementations. According to a GSA Report, 38 countries had 5G networks as of August 2020. The infographic below gives an overview of current deployments. Source: Statista We have noticed during our testing that performance can change a lot depending on location and operator. You may even do not see any real difference between 5G and 4G and this was a case in some test locations in France. Data Speeds Undoubtedly one of the key benefits of 5G is the data transfer either downlink or uplink speed. 5G promises device speeds around 10 times faster than 4G. From the testing, we have performed in two locations we have observed a maximum speed of around twice more than we saw on 4G. In the graph below you can see peak download throughput was 87.75 MB/s for 4G and 201 MB/s for the 5G. More interesting, the average downlink throughput is 3 times faster on 5G than on 4G. 5G speeds are continuously improving and we will be seeing even better performance as the technology matures. According to Qualcomm 5G is designed to deliver peak data rates to up to 20Gbps. So, with the data speeds, we have observed in the specific location if you want to download a 2 hour 4K film (14GB) in 4G it will take you roughly 22 minutes and 50 seconds based on the average score above. If you are looking to download the same film in 5G NSA this will take you 9 minutes 56 seconds in the 5G NSA network. When the 5G technology reaches its peak data rates the same film will be downloaded in an astonishing 6 seconds!! In the second location the testing was performed we did not achieve the same results of increased 5G performance. The performance was only marginally higher, and it can be seen by the graph below and in one instance 4G performed better. Battery Impact The download speed is very appealing for some and below we can see what the impact on the battery will be. From the testing we have performed we had just over the double increase in the data speed on 5G and this is accelerating the battery drain. The extra power drain is compensated by shorter data transfers. From the graph, we can see the 4G (Black colour) provides a more linear gradual discharge of the battery whereas 5G (Blue colour) a higher discharge rate. We can also see that Battery temperature is also impacted. The graph in Black represents the 5G NSA network whereas the graph on Blue the 4G. This clearly shows the handset has to work harder when downloading content and reaching higher speeds. These results represent some of the initial observations and our team is working on additional tests to provide you more information on different brands of devices, chipsets and Network Operators. Further results will be shared in the coming months with performance on specific devices, chipsets, and Network Operators. The best smartphones have a lifespan of 4 days as shown in the table below. You can see that there is a range of manufacturers trying to achieve the Wiko Power U20 4 Days of Usage - it remains ranked #1. The Redmi Note 11S joins many Mid Tier smartphones that have managed to reach 2 Days of Usage and joins a very competitive area of the Mid Tier, as highlighted below. The Redmi Note 11S does offer a dependable battery life, although there are more powerful alternatives, therefore is well-positioned in ranking order of #42in Days of Usage. CHARGING TIME – Hours and Minutes CHARGING TIME - Hours and Minutes The charging time to 100% was just 53 minutes. 66W SuperCharge is available. The Redmi Note 11S finds well amongst the top ten fastest charging smartphones tested so far, as seen in the Charge Times Ranking table. Having reached the under 1-hour charging barrier, it joins many of the OnePlus and Oppo smartphone manufacturers, all offering some very impressive and extremely fast charging times. The Redmi Note 11S gained an overall ranking of #14, a good performance, with an average battery capacity of 5000mAh. The average Charging Time is 1:39 for a Smartphone within the ViserMark Mid Tier. The Redmi Note 11S delivers 0.53 minutes of charging time, matching that of the OnePlus Nord CE and just ahead of the Realme 8 Pro. The graph shown below shows the Charging Times as well as the battery Days of Usage. As you can see the Redmi Note 11S and the OnePlus Nord CE have the same performance results for both Charging Times of 53 minutes and 2 Days of Usage. The Realme 8 Pro still achieves better Days of Usage with 2.5 days, despite having a slightly slower Charge Time of 55 minutes, while the quickest charging times are often hampered with lower Days of usage, as shown with the OnePlus Nord 2. The Redmi Note 11S does offer 33W fast charging and is shipped with a power adapter, so you can charge it straight away. It does compete well as a Mid Tier smartphone and is in the overall Top 10 of fastest Charging Times -see our Charging Times Table POWER EFFICIENCY – 5 Leaf Rating There are several power-efficient processors, within today's smartphones, that can cope with the growing number of new applications and can support high-resolution displays without compromising battery life. Power Efficiency is calculated using Battery Life and Battery Capacity. This is expressed in “Leaves", reflecting a rating between 1 being the least and 5 being the most power-efficient. The Redmi Note 11S obtained an overall Power Efficiency Score of 1.0. The average score for a Mid Tier smartphone is 1.6, meaning the Redmi Note 11S is just below the average in our power efficiency ViserMark Power Efficiency ranking table. From the table shown below, we have taken the previous graph showing the Mid Tier performance results of Charging Times and Days of Usage and now introduce the Power Efficiency results. These are highlighted in green. The Redmi Note 11S does achieve 1.0, as many of the Mid Tier smartphones as a Rating for Power Efficiency. What is interesting to see, is the contrast between Charging Times and Days of Use. From the graph shown above the Redmi Note 11S can perform considerably well, with 2 Days of Usage as well as a fast-charging time of 53 minutes. However, its predecessor the Redmi Note 10 matches both Days of Usage and Power Efficiency, the Charging Time was 1 hour and 17 minutes. Therefore, to conclude Xiaomi smartphones, have made developments in design and performance as shown with the Redmi Note 11S. Although only maintaining, not improving Days of Usage and Power Efficiency, a much quicker charging time has been delivered. Should I buy it? In conclusion, the Redmi Note 11S is a good smartphone, with excellent battery capacity. Although perhaps a little overpriced, when compared to other Mid Tier smartphones, the Poco F3 provides the same offering with 49/100 Battery Score Performance, slightly slower Charging Times, yet less expensive. Within the Mid Tier area, smartphones find it difficult to stand out above the rest, the Redmi Note 11S has seen improved Charging Times but has lacked to develop Days of Usage to be able to be competitive with several other Mid Tier smartphones that are regularly achieving 2 plus Days of Uasge.
