Highlights from IFA 2022 in Berlin

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

Here's what we discovered...

Our SmartViser team (the test automation technology that powers ViserMark) has visited IFA in Berlin this year and has brought us the key highlights from the event. IFA is a trade show mainly for consumer electronics and home appliances. After a 2 years gap due to the Covid Pandemic, the show opened its doors on the 2nd of September. Organisers said more than 161,000 visitors attend this year’s event.

So what were the main highlights?

SmartViser at IFA 2022

Our team of experts were at IFA in Berlin discussing the new proposal by the EU on an energy efficiency Index rating for smartphone batteries. Under the new proposal, the Ecodesign and energy labels will aim to make smartphones and tablets more sustainable.

According to Fraunhofer IZM

The new energy label for smartphones and tablets will not only display the familiar energy efficiency labels. For the first time, it will include the new EU-wide repairability rating and more information about reliability with details about how long the battery can be expected to last and how the device would fare when exposed to dust, submerged in water, or accidentally dropped”

See below the proposal for the new label:

Asus at IFA 2022

Following the recent smartphone launches with flexible screens, it was good to see the Zenbook 17-Fold OLED. The price is expected to be around $3,499. The technology was very impressive and a magnetically attached keyboard can also be used. The total weight is 1.5kg and the keyboard 1.8kg.

Other features include Intel Core i7-1250U, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, 75 Wh of battery and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Honor at IFA 2022

Honor announced a brand-new device during the IFA show. The new Honor 70. It follows the fast-charging trend with a 66W Super Charge Technology. Great dual curve design which sits very comfortably in your hand. It has a 6.67” OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its camera debuts the Sony IMS 800 Image sensor, 54 MP main camera, 50MP Ultra-wide and Macro second main camera and a 32 MP super clear selfie camera.

It boasts a GPU Turbo X which alleges it maintains high frame rates and low power consumption. We will look forward to testing this claim in our ViserMark lab.

It also has a fairly large battery 4800mAh with a 66W supercharge. The Honor 50 with a 4300mAh battery reached a 2 days battery and 1.5 out of 5 in Battery Energy Efficiency. Let’s see if the Honor 70 surpasses that.

During the show, Honor also showcased the Magic 4 Pro which was announced earlier in the year.

Huawei at IFA 2022

Even though Huawei had a low profile over the last couple of years they did make an announcement of two devices at IFA 2022. The Nova 10 and Nova 10 Pro. As Google has revoked access to Play services the company has created its own known as Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). Both devices will only be available in China as well as in some neighbouring countries. They may also be released at a later stage to international markets like Europe.

The device comes with a 60MP Dual Autofocus front Camera and a 100E Super Charge Turbo. It is powered by a 4500 mAh battery. If the battery level is in the red, you can select HUAWEI SuperCharge Turbo mode to fully charge the battery in 20 minutes and charge the battery from 20% to 80% in 10 minutes according to the company’s info. HUAWEI nova 10 Pro supports a screen refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The screen refresh rate can adapt by switching between 120 Hz and 60 Hz.

During the show, we also had the opportunity to see the Huawei P50 Pocket. The company’s own foldable version. The device has a 6.9” Flexible OLED and a 120Hz screen refresh rate.
