  • Smartphone Battery Power Efficiency by ViserMark

Many of you who have been following ViserMark for the last 12 months have noticed that we had a big revamp on our Smartphone Battery Life score and performance. We have also used this opportunity to the introduction of the much-anticipated industry-first Battery Power Efficiency Label for smartphone devices. Introducing The Power Efficiency Label- How power-efficient is a Smartphone? It simply means maximising the performance of a Smartphone while reducing the amount of energy it consumes, with minimal impact on battery life. It is calculated using Battery Life and Battery Capacity. This is expressed in “Leaves" and reflects a rating between 1 being the least and 5 being the most power-efficient. The most battery efficient device will provide good battery life and reduce the number of times the battery will need to be charged which harms its longevity. Learn More About The ViserMark Power Efficiency Label As we rely more and more on our devices to connect to the internet, stream movies, work, manage our fitness and health, do our banking together with several other aspects of our life it is not surprising that battery life becomes a key factor for smartphone selection. Battery life is the single most important aspect of the mobile user experience. As consumers continue to move more and more activities over to smartphones it is not surprising that Smartphone penetration is still on the rise and according to Statista: 38% of the world’s total population owned a smart device in 2018, and the smartphone penetration rate has continued climbing, reaching 46.5% in 2020. By 2025, it is forecast that almost 87% of all mobile users in the United States will own a smartphone, an increase from the 27% of mobile users in 2010. As we become more reliant on smartphones and end-users demand larger batteries and better battery life, we have also seen a huge increase in battery size. According to Android Authority, the average battery capacity for smartphones was around 3,400mAh in 2013. Towards the end of 2020, the average battery size is now between 4,000mAh to 5,000mAh. Statista has published last February 2021 the shipments per battery capacity in India in 2020 vs 2019 and the number of devices with 5,000mAh a battery has almost tripled in number. Most smartphones launched in India during the first half of 2020 had a battery capacity of over 4,000 milliampere hours. 25 smartphones had batteries between 4,000 mAh to 4,999 mAh, while 20 of them had a battery capacity of over 5,000 mAh. This contrasted with the trend of the preceding year, where most smartphones were below 4,000 mAh. A similar trend is observed across the world and is expected to continue further. It is not long until the standard size battery will be 6,000+ mAh. This trend seems to be fuelled by two main drivers one being the consumers demanding better battery life and the other is technology advancements with breakthrough materials like graphene which is expected to be a game-changer. Will this Improve the Battery Life Performance? We discovered through our ViserMark findings, when testing over 100+ smartphone devices, just how the range of battery sizes had shifted. As the graph demonstrates below, although fewer smartphones were launched, they were designed with larger battery capacity to provide better performance for the end-user. Does a Bigger Battery Mean Longer Battery Life? Increasing the battery size is expected to make a difference in the battery life but from what we have seen in the last 12 months in ViserMark this is not necessarily always the case. Simply increasing the battery size without further optimisations will not result in optimum battery performance. With the introduction of the Power Efficiency Label, we can see how well the software optimised to utilise this battery capacity. In our lab, we have tested devices with a 5,000mAh battery capacity that last between 3.5 days of use to a very disappointing 1.5 days of use. The big performance gap has a lot to do with the effort each manufacturer had put in their R&D to search and implement a better battery life autonomy for their devices. Chips and operating systems are intended to become more energy-efficient. However, more effort needs to be made in improving the power management of the device than relying on a larger battery size that utilises more precious metals harming the environment. • Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro - Battery Performance Score

SMARTPHONE TIER: HIGH Battery Capacity mAh: 4050 Robust Smartphone for Tough Environments We have listed what you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro. Smartphone Battery Performance Overall Score: 34/100 High Tier Ranking Table: Ranking #4 Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro, we take a look at the main features as well as the battery performance. Our test results have been translated into ViserMark Labels designed to help you make an informed decision when selecting a smartphone. Smartphone Battery Performance Score and Battery Performance Results Smartphone Battery Performance Overall Score: 34/100 The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro ranks slightly lower than average compared to other smartphones with a Battery Performance Score of 34/100. Both the Ulefone Note 11P and the Samsung A51 have higher overall Battery Performance Scores in the ViserMark Smartphone Ranking 2021 table. High Tier Ranking Table: Ranking #4 Being ranked #4 in the High Tier Ranking table, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro is still unable to compete with the Google Pixel 6 and OnePlus 9 within this tier on battery performance. Battery Performance Testing and Review - March 2022 Product - Good Points Being classed a rugged smartphone and heavy-duty phone, it is more appealable than other smartphones within this area, although it is only shipped in black, has 4GB of RAM with 64GB storage. Although being powered by a Samsung's Exynos 9611 processor with a battery capacity of 4050mAh, it has a removable battery, allowing a replacement when more usage is required. A fully charged battery can be swapped easily, ideal for those times when a power plug is not available. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro meets both IP68 and MIL-STD 810G standards, therefore is extremely suited for field-based professionals or manufacturing Having a 6.3” high-resolution display, it is well suited for viewing photos and maps providing good contrast and brightness, it is fair to say this has been one of its best features. With increased touch sensitivity, gloves can be worn at all times, perfect for working professionals protecting their hands, also the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro supports Simplified Business Communications, that allow Push-To-Talk solutions, simply turning your phone into a secure walkie-talkie with other users. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro comes with a USB-C charger and 3.5 headphones Product - Be Aware of Points During our testing we uncovered, despite being a great rugged smartphone, ideal for outdoors, there were limitations with the overall performance of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro. Having only 4GB of Ram, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro can be slow and is not available to support 5G, as other rugged smartphones offer. Therefore, it is unable to compete with other smartphones, due to the lower performance results achieved. This smartphone has a good camera, although doesn't support night vision or a thermal camera, some features are again offered by other available rugged smartphones. Our test results show that only 1 day of usage was achieved, however, a replacement battery option has its benefits for extending battery life when no power points are near. The charging time of 1 hour 54 minutes ranked the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro #54 within our overall Charging Times table. With an average time charging time achieved, it may still not be accepted as being faster enough. During testing, we can calculate both the power and efficiency of a smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro had a disappointing score for Power Efficiency only achieving a modest 0.5 out of 5. Also within the High Tier, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover was unable to compete with its underpowered when compared to the Google Pixel 6. Product Features and Specification Release Date January 2022 Let’s have a look at the review by ViserMark based on the results during testing. You can find the full results of our battery performance testing below: Overall Battery Performance The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro has a 4050 mAh battery capacity, which is significantly smaller than the 4600 of the Google Pixel 6 when comparing High Tier smartphones. It is powered by a Samsung Exynos 9611 process and offers the benefits of being water and dust resistant. With an average price, of just over 499 EURO, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro is classed as a High Tier smartphone and although not having some of the desired features of the Flagship/Pro smartphones it can still compete with most of the rugged smartphones on offer, such as the Doogee S96. In our testing, Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro achieved the following test results: Battery Performance Score – 34 out of 100 The overall Battery Performance Score is now a global score taking calculations from Battery Life, Power Efficiency and Charging Times. Based on the battery performance testing results, this smartphone received a ViserMark score of 34/100. With this score, the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro smartphone is ranked #85 and so at the lower end of the ViserMark Smartphone Ranking 2021 table. When looking at the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro within the High Tier, it has reached the lower 30s, due to the limitations of processing power. It's lacking to achieve the higher performance scores within the High Tier of the OnePlus 8T and Huawei P40 Pro. BATTERY LIFE - Days of Use Based on the ViserMark test protocol, the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro achieved only a score of one day. The Average Day of Use ViserMark score of a High Tier smartphone is “1.7” Day of Use which places the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro again at the bottom of the table when compared to other High Tier smartphones. The best smartphones have a lifespan of 4 days as shown in the table below. You can see that there is a range of manufacturers trying to achieve the Wiko Power U20 4 Days of Usage - it remains ranked #1. The Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro has a similar battery life rating to the Sony XQ-BC52 and the Samsung A51 as shown by this Day of Usage Table. Due to the lower battery performance. Despite, the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro being ranked #97 in Days of Usage, it does have the advantage of a replaceable battery, therefore battery life can be extended easily if required. CHARGING TIME – Hours and Minutes CHARGING TIME - Hours and Minutes The charging time to 100% was 1 hour 54 minutes. Fast charging is available. Given its results, the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro finds itself at the midpoint of the Overall Charge Times Ranking table, with the Sony Experia with a slightly faster charging time. It gained an overall ranking of #54, a good performance considering its lower battery capacity of 4050mAh and processing power compared with all other smartphone charging times. The average Charging Time is 1:10 for a Smartphone within the ViserMark High Tier. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro with its impressive 1:54 charging time is faster than the Motorola Moto Edge and still able to compete with the Google Pixel 6 has a slightly faster charging time of 1:47 POWER EFFICIENCY – 5 Leaf Rating There are several power-efficient processors, within today's smartphones, that can cope with the growing number of new applications and can support high-resolution displays without compromising battery life. Power Efficiency is calculated using Battery Life and Battery Capacity. This is expressed in “Leaves" and reflects a rating between 1 being least and 5 being the most power-efficient. The Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro obtained an overall Power Efficiency Score of 0.5. The average score for a High Tier smartphone is 1.1, meaning the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro stands in the low part of the power efficiency ViserMark Power Efficiency ranking table. From the table shown below, you can see that the overall Power Efficiency of smartphones within the High Tier only achieves 1.5 within their ratings. Conclusion In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro offers the option of a rugged smartphone suitable for the outdoors, with the added option of a replaceable battery when power points are not nearby. However, performance is lacking due to processing power and an average battery capacity. There are already rumours from Samsung that they are developing a new Galaxy XCover Pro 2 and that it could be unveiled as early as this summer. This could mean that Samsung is introducing the first rugged smartphone with 5G capabilities. We are looking forward to welcoming this new smartphone into our testing labs. It will be interesting to compare the battery score and the performance of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro 2 when it is available. We can't wait! Should I buy it? The smartphone is ideal for enterprises and people working outdoors, as a rugged device with a replaceable battery. This allows people to swap to a fully charged battery when extended usage is required, often when there are no power points nearby. Its camera offers high-quality pictures when out in the field and its touch-sensitive touch allows field engineers, factory workers and construction crews to continue wearing hand protection whilst still working. The Push-to-Talk solution also is a useful additional feature. The overall performance may not be to everyone's liking and other better performing rugged smartphones could be an alternative. However, with continued development, the next smartphone in this series could offer 5G capabilities and much more! At the start of the new year and with events returning in 2022 we hope that many companies can start off on a high note for the rest of the year. Two of the industry major events are playing a key role this year where manufacturers can showcase their latest innovations and announce new products. Let's take a look at the events and the next innovations that we can expect in 2022. The first event Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) was held in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier in the month. There were well over 40,000 attendees in person, including 1800 global media, across 11 indoor and outdoor venues. The show was truly a global event, with 30% of attendees travelling from outside the US – representing 119 countries. This event is the place to be for companies with cutting-edge technologies who are at the forefront of their fields, producing high quality and innovative products that are paving the way for the future. IMAGE CREDIT: Consumer Technology Association Key Highlights at CES 2022 CES 2022 returned to its home, Las Vegas for the first time since 2020 due to the disruption of the pandemic. There were some noteworthy absentees over 75 companies, from this year’s events including T-Mobile, Microsoft, Google, Lenovo, OnePlus who chose the online presence over the physical face-to-face experience. Here are some of the key highlights for us: 1. TCL’S Second Gen Smart Glasses NXT Wear Air Image Credit: TCL This is the second version of the limited released supply in 2021 but will be 30% lighter from 135g to 75g. The new wearable display has been called by many analysts “a cinema on your face”. It comes with two 1080p micro OLEDs embedded in glass frames that give the wearer an impressive viewing effect of a 140-inch screen from about 4 metres away. They don’t offer any VR or AR capabilities but allows you to view anything from your smartphone handy if don’t want to hold your phone to watch films or videos. No price announcement from TCL yet but the previous version was around $700. 2. Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Nearly a year after the release of the Samsung Galaxy S21 we finally saw the Galaxy S21 FE. Starting price in the UK is expected around £699 for 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. In terms of Tier, this is expected to be Mid-Range Toer for the S21 family. The device uses the same snapdragon 888 chipsets that other S21 models use. It is powered by a battery of 4,500 mAh which can be charged wirelessly or using a wire. We cannot wait to have the device in our ViserMark lab for full battery testing. Stay tuned. 3. One Plus 10 PRO Image Credit One Plus The new One Plus 10 Pro Flagship has been announced during the CES event. Sales have already started in China since mid-January and are expected to arrive in Europe and North America later in 2022. We do expect to see the device at the MWC later on in March. The device comes with a 6.7-inch 120Hz Fluid AMOLED display. It also has a cool new feature called “ Dual Colour Calibation” that allows delivering more accurate natural colours in two different brightness levels. It boasts a 5,000mAh battery with 80W SuperVOOC wired and 50W AirVOOC wireless charging. The former can charge in 32 minutes and the latter in 47 minutes. We will be validating this figure in our ViserMark lab once the device is available in Europe. 4. Vivo V23 Pro Image Credit: Vivo A smartphone for selfie lovers it boasts two front-facing cameras with a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide lens for group selfies. Surely it cannot get better than this. It also allows recording videos in 4K mode on the front camera The device is fuelled with a non-removable Li-Po 4300 mAh battery and has Fast charging 44W capabilities. It does come in various colour options such as Sunshine Gold and Stardust Black. The device is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset, which offers 5G compatibility. 5. NOKIA G400 Nokia's range of smartphones at CES 2022 (Image credit: HMD Global) HMD Global has introduced several new affordable devices in the market and the Nokia G400 has picked the best of CES 2022 award in this segment. The device is 5G and comes with a 48MP main camera, 5,000mAh battery, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Priced at $239 is surely one of the most affordable 5G devices. It is to launch in mid-2022 and we will look forward to getting the device in our lab to check how this impressive spec and competitive price performs. Mobile World Congress 2022 Barcelona Mobile World Congress (MWC 2022) the world’s most influential connectivity event, is back to unleash the full power of connectivity. It is attended by global mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors, and content owners. What we can anticipate in MWC 2022 MWC 2022 will take place in Barcelona between the 28th of February and the 3rd of March. We are proud to announce that SmartViser the technology company that powers ViserMark will be exhibiting at the MWC at Hall 5 French Tech Pavilion Stand 5B41 booth 22. MWC is undoubtedly the largest mobile technology show in the world and is expected to open its doors on the 28th of February in Barcelona. There is a lot of expectations that many manufacturers will announce their new devices during that show as CES this year was relatively poor on new smartphone announcements. Two brands have already confirmed their presence Xiaomi and Huawei. Huawei is also hosting its event ahead of MWC on the 27th of February and it is expected some key products and technology announcements. Other manufacturers are expected to confirm their plans in the coming weeks. In terms of new devices announcements, Samsung with its new Samsung Galaxy S22 is rumoured to land sometime in February in time for the event. There are some rumours that Huawei will unveil a foldable device at the event, and we expect to see more details from OnePlus, with the launch of the OnePlus 10 Pro. We could also see some new releases from Xiaomi, Honor, TCL, Alcatel, Vivo and ZTE. Our SmartViser team will be present at MWC checking all the new technologies and new smartphone releases.
