Key Highlights from CES 2023

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

CES the annual trade show organised by the Consumer Technology Association is one of the most exciting trade shows. Taking place between the 5th – 7th of January in Las Vegas., over 2,000 exhibitors from tech companies across the world were there and according to the organisers, an impressive 115,000 visitors attended.

So with all the big brands taking the stage at this event, what were the latest smartphone announcements shared over the 3 days?

There were not many mobile launches at CES 2023, as we have come to expect from previous shows. Many of the bigger brands have decided to have more dedicated events, such as Samsung with the Galaxy S23 and the new iPhone 15 by Apple which have scheduled dates for unveils throughout 2023.

However, that said there were a few smartphones that did arrive at CES 2023, let us take a look and see what we can expect.

Motorola ThinkPhone

This smartphone has been built for businesses, as Motorola takes its first steps into Business-to-Business (B2B) phones. The ThinkPhone easily synchronises with Microsoft Windows and integrates with Android, providing a seamless experience for users.

It offers excellent features such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powers the phone, the screen is a big 6.6-inch AMOLED canvas with a 120Hz refresh rate and a powerful 5,000mAh battery that supports 68W fast charging. It is also IP68 rated to protect against water and dust and comes with Gorilla® Glass Victus™ for display protection.

Overall an attractive option for employees wanting an upgrade or requesting a new mobile phone. There are no updates from Motorola on the pricing for the ThinkPhone, although there are rumours that it may be between €500 and €600. This will position this smartphone in the ViserMark High Tier based on the pricing, so it will be joining the Samsung XCover Pro, one of our most recently tried and evaluated mobile phones.

Samsung Galaxy A14

With superb specifications, including a 6.6-inch screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 5000mAH battery, the Samsung Galaxy A14 is a good overall smartphone, especially being around €200.

Being classified as a ViserMark Entry Tier phone, this smartphone faces intense competition from other big brands in this tier such as Motorola and OPPO. With most smartphones having the same battery capacity, the Samsung Galaxy A14 gains an advantage, as it has Android 13 and 5G connectivity. We are looking forward to this smartphone arriving in our test lab, to see how the battery life performance compares with other similar phones. Image Credit: Samsung

TCL 40 SE

As an entry-level smartphone, priced at €169, this is another well-designed and functional phone, that competes quite adequately with other big brands.

It has a 6.75-inch screen, a 90Hz refresh rate and is powered by a MediaTek Hello G37 processor with 4GB of RAM. Also, it offers 3 cameras, a 50MP camera on the back and two 2MP cameras. With a battery capacity of 5010mAh as well as being Android 13 ready, this smartphone is a reasonable smartphone, although can it deliver on performance? Only our testing will tell reveal the battery performance results.

OnePlus 11

Being the first launch of 2023 for OnePlus, we were treated to a slight glimpse of this smartphone at CES 2023.

Although the global launch is not official until February, we expect the pricing to match that of a Flagship/Pro smartphone. It has many of the expected OnePlus features including a display of 6.7-inch, 120Hz refresh rate, and a 1440 x 3216 fluid AMOLED screen.

The OnePlus 11 comes with a 5000mAh battery capacity and is supported by 100W charging, notably slightly more than the OnePlus 10 with 80W charging previously. Will the OnePlus 11 be the quickest smartphone for charging that ViserMark has assessed so far?

These smartphones we have mentioned above will, of course, will be a main focus for ViserMark in 2023, along with any further phone releases. Our testing lab is independent, and our skilled experts can deliver accurate smartphone battery test results to smartphone manufacturers, mobile network operators as well as mission-critical organisations.

Once all our tests have been completed, we incorporate all the data and using our telecommunications experience we assign ratings.

Every smartphone has its own unique ViserMark Labels showing Battery Performance, Battery Life, Battery Charging Times, Battery Power Efficiency and the latest Annual Energy Consumption. Finally, we compare the results with other similarly priced smartphones categorised with ViserMark Tiers based on price.

We are looking forward to sharing with you new smartphone reviews very soon.
