The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 represents a more ambitious evolution of Samsung’s foldable portfolio, introducing a distinctive passport-style format designed to balance portability with an immersive tablet-like experience. Shorter and wider than previous Galaxy Z Fold devices, it feels more natural when closed while offering a spacious display for entertainment, reading, and multitasking when unfolded. Combined with substantial improvements in battery efficiency, the Fold8 delivers one of Samsung’s most complete foldable experiences to date.
At its core sits the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, paired with the Adreno 840 GPU. With 12GB or 16GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB, the Z Fold8 provides the performance required for demanding multitasking, high-end gaming, and AI-assisted applications. The wider internal display allows up to three apps to run side by side, while overall navigation remains fast and responsive. Extended gaming sessions can cause the device to become warm, but everyday performance remains consistently smooth.
The display configuration is one of the device’s defining features. On the outside, the 5.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display offers a resolution of 1248x1972 and a practical 10:16 aspect ratio for messaging, browsing, and social media. Unfolding the device reveals a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a resolution of 1848x2448 and a tablet-like 4:3 aspect ratio. Both displays support an adaptive refresh rate of between 1Hz and 120Hz and reach a peak brightness of up to 2600 nits. The anti-reflective finish, vibrant colours, and less visible central crease create an excellent experience for reading, gaming, video playback, and multitasking.
Design-wise, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is a more radical departure from previous generations. Its shorter, wider dimensions give it a passport-like shape that feels compact and distinctive, while its 201g weight makes it lighter than many conventional flagship smartphones. It measures just 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.7mm when closed, allowing it to fit comfortably into a pocket despite its dual-screen construction. Samsung’s Flex Titanium display structure combines a titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate to support a thinner and more durable foldable panel, while the Armor FlexHinge provides a rigid folding mechanism. However, the Z Fold8 does not support the partially folded Flex Mode available on some other Samsung foldables.
The device carries an IP48 rating, providing water resistance and protection against solid objects larger than 1mm. However, this does not offer complete protection against fine dust or sand. Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 protects the cover display, while Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is used on the rear of the device. The Fold8 is available in Lavender, Graphite, Cream, and the Samsung-exclusive Pistachio finish, although colour availability may vary between markets.
Photography is capable but not the Fold8’s primary focus. The rear camera system combines a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation and a 50MP ultrawide camera. It is supported by 10MP cameras on both the cover and internal displays. The main camera produces detailed images with attractive colours and dependable dynamic range, while the ultrawide provides greater flexibility for landscapes and group photographs. Video recording is available at up to 8K at 30fps, alongside stabilisation and AI-assisted features such as My FanCam. However, the absence of a dedicated telephoto camera limits optical zoom capabilities and may disappoint users expecting a more versatile camera system at this price.
Battery performance is where the Galaxy Z Fold8 distinguishes itself most clearly. It also supports 45W wired charging, reaching up to 63% in approximately 30 minutes under Samsung’s laboratory conditions. It supports 20W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare for charging compatible accessories and other devices. The 45W power adapter is sold separately.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 runs Android 17 with One UI 9, providing a mature software experience adapted to its unusual screen proportions. Tablet-style application layouts, drag-and-drop functionality, split-screen multitasking, Samsung DeX, Galaxy AI, and Gemini Intelligence all take advantage of the larger internal display. However, some third-party applications and games do not scale perfectly across its unusual screen ratios. The absence of S Pen support also prevents the Fold8 from fully replacing a dedicated productivity tablet for users who rely on handwritten notes or precise stylus input.
With Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, 5G, stereo speakers, NFC, UWB, dual-SIM functionality, and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the side button, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 covers the essential features expected from a premium foldable. Its high price, limited optical zoom, and lack of Flex Mode remain notable compromises, but its compact format, excellent displays, flagship performance, and above-average ViserMark battery results make it one of Samsung’s most convincing foldable smartphones yet.

Who Should Buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8?
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is ideal for users who want a foldable primarily for entertainment and everyday content consumption. Its compact passport-style design, lightweight construction, and wide 7.6-inch internal display make it particularly well suited to watching videos, gaming, browsing social media, reading, and casual multitasking.
Battery performance is one of its strongest qualities. In our testing, the Z Fold8 delivered 60 hours of use, alongside a Battery Performance Score of 52/100 and low annual energy consumption. This makes it suitable for commuters, frequent travellers, and heavy media users who want a foldable that can comfortably last beyond a full day.
The device is also a compelling entry point for users purchasing their first book-style foldable. Its 201g construction, compact dimensions, minimal display crease, and easier-to-open design make it more approachable than many traditional foldables. One UI 9, Samsung DeX, Galaxy AI, and flexible split-screen tools also provide useful productivity features when required.

ViserMark VERDICT
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 - what's it like to use?
Using the Galaxy Z Fold8 feels noticeably different from using either a conventional smartphone or a traditional book-style foldable. Its short, wide shape makes it compact and easy to carry, while the 201g construction prevents it from feeling excessively heavy. The cover screen works well for quick messages and everyday checks, although its reduced vertical space means more scrolling and may require some adjustment.
The 7.6-inch internal display is the highlight of the experience. Its wide 4:3 format makes watching videos, gaming, reading, browsing, and viewing photos particularly enjoyable, with minimal black borders around much of the content. The reduced crease and anti-reflective coating help the screen feel more like a small tablet, while One UI 9 provides smooth split-screen multitasking and drag-and-drop functionality. However, some applications and games do not scale perfectly to the unusual proportions.
Performance is consistently fast and responsive. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and up to 16GB of RAM handle demanding applications, multitasking, and gaming without noticeable slowdown, although the device can become warm during extended gaming sessions. The absence of Flex Mode and S Pen support slightly reduces its versatility compared with more productivity-focused foldables.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold8 feels fresh, compact, and particularly enjoyable for media consumption. It offers a convincing balance between smartphone portability and tablet-style immersion, although the short cover display, limited camera system, slow charging, and occasional app-scaling issues remain important compromises.
