What's it like to Use?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 improves on the previous version by eliminating the unattractive V-shaped gap when closed, resulting in a seamless exterior design. It is built with a sturdy Armor aluminium frame and Victus glass exterior, making it highly durable.


However, the external 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED display lacks S-Pen support, and the camera technology remains largely unchanged, relying on upgrade enhancements from the new Snapdragon chipset. The battery life is consistent with the previous model. Although the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 addresses previous shortcomings, it feels like a minor upgrade, focusing on refining existing features and design elements.


With a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen inside the fold, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 has an appreciated 120Hz high refresh rate. This display boasts a brightness of 1,750 nits, a 30% improvement over its predecessor, making it suitable for outdoor use. This smartphone offers vibrant colours, wide viewing angles, and better colour accuracy than the front display, though a noticeable crease remains, particularly in direct sunlight.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features two distinct displays. The front screen is a 6.2-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering clear visuals and smooth scrolling.


However, its 23.1:9 aspect ratio might feel narrow for certain tasks, and it has a brightness of 703 nits, lower than some competitors. The colour accuracy is also slightly inferior.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset powers the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and has an enhanced storage capacity, ensuring fast and high-performance processing. Its 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable display provides a vivid visual experience with a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate and HDR10+ support. It also features a discreet under-display 4MP camera and is compatible with the S-Pen.

During the ViserMark testing, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 reached 32 hours, translating into 1.5 days, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 reached an even better battery life of 42 hours, translating into only 1 day.


It is worth noting that the previous model of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, namely the Z Flip4, had a battery capacity of 3,700 mAh, which remains the same for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5. On the other hand, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 features a 4,400 mAh battery, just like its predecessor, but with a thinner and more compact design.

 
 

Now, looking at the charging. It's great that battery life has improved, but it's disappointing that Samsung has not increased the wired and wireless charging speeds beyond 25W and 15W, respectively.


Also competing in this area is the OPPO Find N2 Flip, which has a slightly lower battery capacity of 4300mAh, and the cells are positioned on either side of the smartphone hinge. It can last 1.5 days of usage, translating into 36 hours. OPPO does state that the batteries can maintain at least 80% of their original capacity for a minimum of 800 full charge cycles and offers a repairable battery service with replacements available and trade-in options. Additionally, OPPO supplies the 44W SuperVOOC charging to provide a 50% charge in 24 minutes and a full charge in an hour.
