All you need to know about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G smartphone.

Overview

Xiaomi released 4 new smartphones as part of the Redmi series: the Redmi Note 12, the Redmi Note 12 5G, and 2 smartphones in the Pro range, the Redmi Note 12 Pro and Redmi Note 12 Pro+. ViserMark has already tested the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G - offering good features and specifications for the price, especially as it comes with a 120Hz OLED display, excellent battery life and a great selfie camera. Now, it's the turn of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G.

What's it like to Use?

So, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G has a superior IMX766 camera with OIS, 67W fast charging, and a 120Hz AMOLED display. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro comes with Gorilla Glass 5 that protects the display, and the matte coating on the back prevents dirt and fingerprint marks from being too noticeable. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G is designed to withstand falls from 1-2 meters and has an IP53 rating for protection against dust and water splashes.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G looks slightly different from the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, as it has a more curved matte glass back panel, making it appear thinner and more sophisticated. Also, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G is available in three colours: Sky Blue, Polar White, and Midnight Black. A Stardust Purple version is currently only available in China.

The new Redmi series features a camera housing design similar to the flagship Xiaomi 12 series. The camera set-up is slightly raised and houses the 50MP primary, 8MP ultrawide, and 2MP macro cameras. Also, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G now has a 6.67-inch OLED screen and supports 10-bit colour depth, Dolby Vision, and a welcomed 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10 certification.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G dimensions are 163 x 76 x 8 mm, weighing 187 grams. This makes it 1mm shorter and 15 grams lighter than its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. Even though it is not as high-end as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+, the flat design and glossy back panel of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G. Overall, this phone is stylish, has a good grip and is easy to handle and operate, although it is not fully waterproof.

How does it Perform?

Running on Xiaomi's latest MIUI 14 platform is based on Android 12, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G provides a unique appearance and user experience. To enhance the device, Xiaomi has included various features like an image gallery, file manager, calculator, alarm clock, and more. Also, MIUI 14 comes with a Security app that offers an extra layer of protection against malware. The app also consolidates app settings and privacy features in one location.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro is equipped with the Dimensity 1080 chipset from MediaTek, also found inside the Redmi Note 12 Pro+. This chipset is a newer version of the Dimensity 920 found inside the older Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G device, offering improved performance, efficiency, and enhanced camera capabilities.

With three different memory options offered, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro includes LPDDR4X and UFS 2.2 storage - 6GB RAM with 128GB (limited), 8GB RAM with 128GB (mainstream), and 8GB RAM with 256GB (high tier). It is worth noting that the Pro models do not support microSD expansion this year.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro features a familiar triple camera set-up - it uses a 50MP Sony IMX766 1/1.56" sensor with 1.0µm pixels and a Quad-Bayer filter similar to Flagship offerings as a high-res main camera. The ultrawide camera uses an 8MP Samsung S5K4H7 ISOCELL Slim sensor, and the macro camera uses a 2MP OmniVision OV02B1 sensor. It's worth pointing out that both Pro models are updated with OIS, which should help in certain occasions, such as low-light photography.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+, and previous Redmi Note 11 models all have a 5,000mAh battery. This gives the smartphone a satisfactory performance and good battery life, which is especially important given the competitive nature in the ViserMark Mid Tier (€200-€499) for smartphones with similar hardware.

The Google Pixel 7a has a 4,355mAh battery capacity, smaller than the 5,000mAh battery of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and can gain a few more hours of battery life. However, the Samsung Galaxy A34 shows greater power efficiency for excellent battery life lasting over 2 days.

Should I buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G?

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G supports a 120Hz high refresh rate for a smooth and seamless visual experience. Even with notable improvements, the Google Pixel 7a only has a 90Hz display, with most competitors, including the Samsung Galaxy A34, already at 120Hz. So, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G is worth considering.

The most battery-efficient smartphones will provide good battery life and reduce the number of times the battery will need to be charged, harming its longevity. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G provides excellent battery life and is better than others in the Mid Tier.

All smartphones compete well in the Mid Tier and are affordable. Although the Samsung Galaxy A34 is a good all-around smartphone like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G, it has been superseded by the newly released Samsung Galaxy A54. With its Exynos 1380 chipset, a 5,000mAh battery capacity, a smaller display, and an adaptive refresh rate, it was anticipated to offer better battery life. However, upon comparison, it falls short of expectations, providing almost 10 hours less battery life than the Samsung Galaxy A34.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro is a stylish smartphone and an impressive option with significant upgrades over the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. It supports Dolby Vision and the new Dimensity 1080 chipset is slightly improved from last year's Dimensity 920, providing adequate power for gaming. The camera 50MP set-up is high-quality, matching that of other more expensive flagship devices, which is excellent.

The older Android 12 operating system is also a bit disappointing. Still, despite this, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro has many features and specifications at an affordable price, matching the competition of other big brands in the Mid Tier.
