All you need to know about the Samsung A54 smartphone.

Overview

Samsung released two smartphones in March 2023 as part of the Galaxy series with all the usual functionality expected from smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has been upgraded from the previous Samsung Galaxy A53. It is more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy A34, yet both have benefited from an improved design taken from the Galaxy S23 series of smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is a well-positioned contender in the Mid Tier of smartphones priced between €200-€499. Although it looks like a Flagship/Pro device and is similar to the Samsung S23 device, it delivers key smartphone features that users expect for daily tasks at an affordable price, the same price as Samsung charged for the Samsung Galaxy A53. The Samsung Galaxy A54 is available in black, white, lime green and violet versions.

The display of the Samsung Galaxy A54 smartphone has been reduced. It is now smaller, being 6.4 inches, not that a 1-inch reduction would be noticed from the Samsung Galaxy A53. With an AMOLED display and a 1,080 x 2,340px resolution, the Samsung Galaxy A54 still has a 120Hz refresh rate, like the Samsung Galaxy A34. Also, it promotes durability with Gorilla Glass 5 display protection and IP67 rated for water and dust resistance.

What's it like to Use?

Being powered by the new and slightly more powerful Exynos 1380 chipset, the Samsung Galaxy A54 brings performance improvements compared to its predecessor. Samsung claims it provides a 20% boost in CPU and a 26% boost in GPU, therefore more than adequate power for daily usage and general apps.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a triple camera setup, the main camera with a 50-megapixel sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5MP macro camera. Improvements have resulted in sharper images, and the Night Mode feature is welcomed. Also, there is no telephoto camera, as Samsung has decided to allocate this feature for Flagship/Pro smartphones. Three storage configurations are available for the Samsung Galaxy A54: 128GB storage with 6GB of RAM, 128HB storage with 8GB of RAM, and 256GB storage with 8GB of RAM, and more storage can be added if required via a MicroSD card.

How does it perform?

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has the latest One UI 5.1 and is shipped with Android 13. This smartphone can cope with any day-to-day tasks, provides an all-around performance, and offers the end user a smooth and responsive experience.

With a regular 5,000mAh battery capacity, the Samsung Galaxy A54 performed well in our smartphone battery performance testing. The battery lasts up to 1.5 days or up to 39 hours, which is adequate for handling many of the expected daily tasks.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has no charger in the box when shipped, as part of Samsung's efforts to reduce waste from consumer electronic devices. It has 25W charging, although not fast charging; it's what's expected from a Mid Tier smartphone, as is the absence of a headphone jack.

What's in the box?

  • Mobile Phone

  • USB-Type-C (compatible with Samsung's 25W fast charging)

  • No charger included

A Quick Summary

The Samsung Galaxy A54 offers excellent value for money for a smartphone in the Mid Tier. It has a tempting premium design and is a well-built smartphone with all the features and functionality you would expect.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A54 delivers good performance in all key areas yet will struggle to compete with High Tier and Flagship/Pro Tiers, yet still provide a reliable smartphone at an affordable price.

Battery Life

Smartphone battery life performance can vary significantly depending on several factors, including device hardware, software optimisation, battery capacity, usage patterns, and individual settings.

When contemplating smartphone battery life, focus on these areas:

  • The battery capacity, usually measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), determines how much charge a battery can store.

  • The Battery Life ViserMark Label displays the "Days-of-Use" in both actual days and provides accurate information in hours. It reflects the usage of a smartphone from a full charge.

How long will the Samsung Galaxy A54 battery last?

ViserMark understands that this is a key factor when considering any smartphone, and we are pleased to announce that the Samsung Galaxy A54 delivered well on battery performance -with a spectacular 1.5 days of use, translating into 39 hours between charges.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a battery capacity of 5000mAh. Offering a good performance, it provides 1.5 days of daily usage. However, it falls behind the OPPO A78 and the Samsung Galaxy A34 in the Mid Tier, as displayed in the chart below.

A chart showing Smartphone Battery Life Ratings for the Mid Tier
A chart showing Smartphone Battery Life Ratings for the Mid Tier

With the introduction of hours added to the ViserMark Battery Life Label, it is even easier to see just how competitive the smartphones are regarding battery life performance.

As you can see, two comparable smartphones last up to 2 days, just like most other smartphones in the Mid Tier providing adequate daily usage. With both smartphones having a 5,000mAh battery capacity, the OPPO A78 offers up to 53 hours in our battery performance testing, giving 2 days of good battery life on a single charge using the battery efficiency of the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip. A MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset powers the Samsung Galaxy A34. This chipset was released at the end of 2022 and can still deliver 2 days of battery life and offer fast performance, efficient battery usage and good gaming performance.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has an Exynos 1380 chipset with a 5,000mAh battery capacity. With its power-efficient chip, smaller display, and adaptive refresh rate, it was anticipated to offer better battery life. However, upon comparison, it falls short of expectations, providing almost 10 hours less battery life than the Samsung Galaxy A34.

Both handsets perform well during day-to-day use despite using different chipsets. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a 6.4-inch display, and the Samsung Galaxy A34 has a bigger 6.6” display, providing a better user experience for streaming box sets and gaming.

It is worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy M51, released in 2020, still holds the top spot for having one of the longest-lasting smartphone batteries in the Mid Tier, with a smartphone Battery Life of an impressive 3.5 days of use or translated into hours an incredible 82 hours.

How power efficient is the Samsung Galaxy A54?

The Samsung Galaxy A54 was awarded 1 out of 5 as a smartphone battery efficiency score, the same as the Samsung Galaxy A34.

OPPO is known for maximising the battery life of its devices, and the OPPO A78 has features like Super Power Saving mode and Super Night-time Standby mode that help to prolong battery life further. Also, the OPPO A78 supports 33w SuperVOOC charging, so with fast charging speed and efficient battery life, it is unsurprising that the OPPO A78 has a higher power efficiency rating than Samsung devices, as shown in the chart below.

All smartphone chipsets are designed to deliver high performance while consuming minimal power to optimise system resources for improved efficiency. Manufacturers are continuously making minor improvements to balance smartphone performance and energy efficiency. These include the management of background processes and improved app organisation, which enhance resource allocation so power consumption can be minimised.

Annual Energy Consumption

ViserMark is pleased to offer a new label providing a smartphone's Annual Energy Consumption. The calculation is typically based on several factors, including the smartphone model, battery capacity, usage patterns, and charging habits. Although challenging, specific testing criteria are measured using real-life scenarios and live networks to reflect usage accurately.

How much energy does the Samsung Galaxy A54 use?

The ViserMark calculations show the Samsung Galaxy A54 would use 4.16 kWh per Annum.

The chart shows that the Samsung Galaxy A34 is the smartphone with the lowest Annual Energy Consumption, closely followed by the OPPO A78 and Samsung Galaxy A54. All devices have the same battery capacity of 5,000mAh, although the OPPO A78 has 33W wired charging, and the Samsung smartphones have a reduced 25W wired charging capability.

Daily activities greatly influence energy consumption. For instance, frequent use of power-intensive apps, heavy gaming, or prolonged video streaming can drain the battery faster, resulting in higher energy consumption. Conversely, conservative usage and enabling power-saving features can reduce energy consumption. ViserMark's battery performance testing protocol ensures end-users can see an objective benchmark across all smartphones' expected annual electricity consumption.
