All you need to know about the OPPO A78 5G smartphone.

Overview

The OPPO A78 is a Mid Tier smartphone priced between €200-€499. This 5G smartphone was launched in January 2023 and is well-built and affordable, although priced higher than other competitor devices within this category. The OPPO A78 is available in eye-catching shimmering colours of Glowing Purple, Blue and Black and has the feel of a more expensive smartphone than it actually is.

OPPO has made some compromises to keep the OPPO A78 relatively affordable. It has no stand-out features in design, although it has a larger LCD display that should allow for higher resolutions. The OPPO A78 has a resolution of only 1,612 × 720 pixels, which seems lacking in sharpness of image quality due to the lower pixel density display compared to similar smartphones. Also, with 5G connectivity becoming more readily available in smartphones, the OPPO A78 offers an affordable 5G smartphone within the OPPO range.

What's it like to Use?

A MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip runs the OPPO A78. It provides a good reliable overall smartphone performance compared to other Android Mid Tier smartphones. However, some have mentioned that the device gets slightly warm during gaming, but the OPPO A78 is responsive and more than capable of handling everyday tasks.

With a dual-camera setup, the OPPO A78 has a 50MP main camera to enable users to capture crystal-clear, high-resolution images, a 2MP self-portrait lens, and an 8MP front camera for high-quality portraits. To record even more visual details, the A78 5G’s 108MP Ultra-Clear Image uses software algorithms to increase the resolution of images to 108MP, providing an impressive level of clarity. The OPPO A78 also features smart imaging features like AI Portrait Retouching, AI Scene Enhancement, and Ultra Night Mode to help unleash user creativity.

The IP54 rating (which means 'Ingress Protection Code’, the smartphone's resistance to water and dust) of the OPPO A78 is lower than similar smartphones rated to more standard IP67/IP68. The Panda glass offers adequate display protection, and a 3.5mm Headphone Jack is included with stereo speakers.

How does it perform?

With an impressive 5,000mAh battery capacity and the battery efficiency of the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip, the OPPO A78 offers up to 53 hours in our battery performance testing, giving 2 days of good battery life on a single charge.

OPPO invented and introduced fast charging with VOOC, using this advanced technology to create incredibly efficient and fast-charging smartphones. This solution offers a significant competitive advantage when comparing charging times of similar smartphones within the Mid Tier. The OPPO A78 has 33W fast charging, and OPPO states that this device can charge from 15% to 100% in about 95 minutes.

The OPPO A78 is shipped with the ColorOS 13 operating system with Android 12. OPPO has also decided that the OPPO A78 will only receive security updates every quarter, rather than monthly, like other Android phones. OPPO promises two major operating system upgrades and three years of security updates for the OPPO A78.

Refresh rates of 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz are common on smartphones, though some can go up to 144Hz, 165Hz, or even 240Hz. The Mid Tier range of smartphones normally is between 60Hz to 90Hz range. OPPO has ensured a higher refresh rate of 90Hz for the OPPO A78, a pleasing bonus for better performance.

Let us discover if our battery performance testing results can show more key improvements. Other smartphone Battery Performance Scores can be viewed as ViserMark Labels in the Smartphone Ranking Table.

Battery Life

Smartphone battery life performance can vary significantly depending on several factors, including device hardware, software optimisation, battery capacity, usage patterns, and individual settings.

When contemplating smartphone battery life, focus on these areas:

  • The battery capacity, usually measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), determines how much charge a battery can store.

  • The Battery Life ViserMark Label displays the "Days-of-Use" in both actual days and provides accurate information in hours. It reflects the usage of a smartphone from a full charge.

How long will the OPPO A78 battery last?

ViserMark understands that this is a key factor when considering any smartphone, and we are pleased to announce that the OPPO A78 delivered an excellent battery performance - with an amazing 2 days of use, translating into 53 hours between charges.

Daily activities greatly influence energy consumption. For instance, frequent use of power-intensive apps, heavy gaming, or prolonged video streaming can drain the battery faster, resulting in higher energy consumption. Conversely, conservative usage and enabling power-saving features can reduce energy consumption. ViserMark's battery performance testing protocol ensures end-users can see an objective benchmark across all smartphones' expected annual electricity consumption.

Should I buy it?

The OPPO A78 has the look and feel of more than a Mid Tier smartphone. From a user's perspective, it delivers reliable and smooth performance from an impressive 5000mAh battery capacity.

Among Mid Tier smartphones, it does offer 5G connectivity, and excellent battery life, all at an affordable price, although having a higher price tag than others. However, there must be compromises; if a lower resolution and a lacking camera setup are not seen as essential, then the OPPO A78 could be a 5G contender.
